St. Patrick’s Cathedral’s history reflects the major events and turning points in Irish history. St. Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin now has its own official App which gives you the latest visitor information, opening times, worship times, history of the Cathedral and information on all the Cathedral’s historical points of interest together with a detailed interactive floor plan of the Cathedral. One very special feature of this app is that all historical points of interest are accompanied with an audio guide and contains films about the Cathedral containing both historical and recent footage.
The story of St. Patrick’s may go back to the time of Saint Patrick himself. According to legend he used a well onsite to baptise converts to the Christian faith. Celtic grave slabs discovered in 1901 beside the Cathedral prove that the site has been in use for at least a thousand years. The first mention of a church on the site occurred in 890 AD. It is referred to as ‘Saint Patrick’s in-insula’ because those days the area was surrounded by water from the river Poddle.
The Cathedral is the final resting place for up to 700 people. The most famous man buried in the building is Jonathan Swift who is commonly known as the author of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. Swift was Dean of the Cathedral from 1713-45 and he used this influential position to speak out against social injustice and inequality. Today the Cathedral welcomes around 400,000 visitors a year
